A master student from University of Bern had the chance to join the ICOS Summer School 2025.

The ICOS Summer School 2025 took place at the Hyytiälä Forest Station in Finland (5-15 May 2025), situated deep in the forest beside a lake and within reach of a 128 m measurement mast used for ecosystem–atmosphere exchange research. Flavia Bindschedler, master student in the group of Eliza Harris (ICOS PI at University of Bern) was part of it. Over ten days, Flavia received a broad introduction to ICOS measurement techniques across the ocean, atmosphere, and ecosystem domains, as well as sessions on mental health and science communication. Field trips, modelling exercises, and poster sessions provided opportunities to apply theory and exchange research ideas. A creative highlight was the students’ group presentations envisioning the future of ICOS in 2035. And of course, true to Finnish tradition, lively discussions continued each evening in the sauna and around the fireplace in the Kota (a Finnish wooden hut with a fireplace inside).
